I’m always quick to say that NORA Cup is the most important thing we do. Not only does it honor the people that excelled in any given year, but it serves as a bit of a running history of BMX. NORA’s 40+ year history is spotty at best. It has out-lasted the publications that put it on, the winners its honored, and continues on today just as strong as it always has been. For me, it’s a labor of love to give away some NORA Cups every year and it’s a labor I take pretty seriously… So much so, that we’ve kept a running document chronologically breaking down the details of every NORA Cup since it was in the hands of Ride Publishing. Who presented the Dirt Award in 2003? Got it. Who won in 1997? Got it. Where was the 2012 awards held? It’s below. Which year did we have a dwarf Kiss cover band called “Mini Kiss” play? Yup, that happened. Who won in 1897? You lost me…

Early NORA Cup History:
The Number One Rider Award was created in 1979 by BMX Action Magazine. Winners were chosen by the reader’s of BMX Action and originally focused on racing. NORA Cup began with just two categories (rider and team), but it quickly became the most prestigious award in BMX. In 1985, Freestylin’ Magazine (BMX Action‘s sister magazine) introduced most popular freestyle rider, team, and bike categories. In 1989, reader’s of Go: The Rider’s Manual were able to vote for NORA Cup, as well.
The NORA Cup awards ceased in 1991 when the publisher of both magazines (Wizard Publications) went out of business. In 1997, Snap Magazine resurrected NORA Cup with the number one rider, team, and bike on the race side. In 2000, Ride BMX resurrected the freestyle categories and it continued on with various changes until Ride BMX was shuttered in early 2019. The former employees of Ride created Our BMX and continued the NORA Cup tradition…

NORA Cup returns with announcement and ballot in September/October 1997 issue of Snap Magazine. This was pre-internet, so the event took place in 1997, but since the magazine didn’t come out until 1998, it was dubbed the “1998 NORA Cup.”
