Going against the grain, riding how he wants, keeping it fun, taking DIY to the next level… In my opinion Matt Beringer is the very embodiment of what of freestyle is. I’ve been fortunate to spend a lot of time with Matt over the years and he always struck me as someone who was comfortable enough in their own skin to not care what other people thought of him. But little did I know, that despite his insouciant demeaner, Matt was keeping the fact that he was gay bottled up inside. He kept it a secret from friends, family, and the BMX community for fear of how he would be perceived. Through Project Spoke’s “Louder Than a Stereotype” Matt opens about his sexuality, his eventual coming out, and what it was like for him keeping it a secret throughout his long BMX career.
