A new non-profit started out in New England. They plan on hosting events and giving out bikes all their events. You can check out their Instagram here!
Welcome to Wheel House. A bmx based non-profit organization out of New England who’s sole mission is to build bikes for those who can’t. We collect old and new parts to build complete bmx bicycles in the hopes of giving individuals the opportunity to experience our culture. Featured in this video is our crew showing what is possible in the pursuits of riding a bmx bike.
How did Wheel House start?
So basically Wheel House started because I was on a non profit to get a park in a local town. We had gotten gear from a couple companies but due to laws we couldn’t raffle the complete bike away. I was sick of the bs dealing with the towns. So we just have the bike away. The dude now rips and loves bmx.
We had given a couple built up bikes away prior to local skatepark riders. It changed their lives. So we decided to just start doing it on our own. Up to date we have given away 9 bikes in the 2 months we’ve started. Our goal is to give a lot of bikes out.
We have a lot of support of the New England bmx scene. And just from the locals.
We are in the process of the non profit paperwork. We didn’t know if this was going to work. But the reception has been huge. It has been grassroots and the acceptance has been huge. We just thru a jam this past Saturday and had over 50 riders. We gave out 3 built up bikes from donated parts. And a fourth one is going to a rider who couldn’t make it. This upcoming Sunday we are hosting an event and plan on giving 2 bikes.
Who is currently running the non-profit?
So currently myself and 2 others are still on the Foxboro Skatepark Foundation which was a non profit put together to raise funds to rebuild a current(but 20 year old outdoor wood skatepark). This is separate from Wheel House.
With the Foxboro skatepark foundation we raised money through events and grass roots campaigning to raise money. The problem is that the town of Foxboro Mass, don’t want to see the skatepark rebuilt. And have been dealing with the town forever.
I said screw it, I will stay apart of that foundation but I will just start my own thing with 2 members of that Foundation that focusing on getting bikes in kids hands. So realistically if the town didn’t give us such a hassle about the park, Wheel house might not have started. We are just trying to make the community stronger, then maybe towns will see the importance of skateparks etc. BMX is rad, we want kids to have access to bikes and parks.
